Fawn Brodie, niece of President David O. McKay, published in 1945 an honest biography of Joesph Smith, titled, “No Man Knows My History.” The biography, a work of over 7 years for the author, explained new details of Joseph Smith’s life, including his polygamy, his visions, and his treasure digging.
Even today, Fawn Brodie’s work remains one of the most well-studied and complete histories of the Prophet Joseph. It was not a work of fiction, but of fact.
In 1946, Fawn Brodie, lifelong faithful member, was excommunicated from the Church.
Hugh Nibley, apologist for the Church in his later years, wrote a pamphlet, mostly denouncing Brodie herself, while making very few rebuttals to her claims. The Church responded with gratitude and pride.
Today, it would be difficult to find a member of the church who has read, or even heard of “No Man Knows My History.” The Church buried it, just like it buried its author.
